Home > Accessibility

We strive to make our website accessible to everyone. The following features have been implemented to enhance accessibility.

Accesskeys are available throughout the site for those who do not have use of a pointing device. You combine them with Alt (in Windows) or Ctrl (in Mac) to jump to a new location. Depending on your browser you may have to press 'return' after the accesskey to complete the jump. These are our accesskey assignments:

s = skip to main text on same page
m = skip to site menu on same page
# = home page
0 = accessibility page (this page)
1 = introduction section
2 = registration section
3 = preparation section
4 = sitting the LNAT section
5 = help and FAQs section
6 = sitemap
7 = terms of use

Skip navigation. For the benefit of those using non-visual browsers, every page begins with two invisible links: one allows you to skip directly to the main body of text on the page; the second allows you to skip directly to the site menu at the bottom of the page. Note: the main body of text on every page starts with a linked header that tells you exactly where you are on the site, relative to the home page.

Browser interoperability. The site has been validated throughout as HTML 4.01 Transitional.

Cascading style sheets are used to control text formatting. The stylesheet has been validated to CSS2 standards. The site is also fully functional with browsers that do not use style sheets.

Type size on the screen can be increased and decreased using your browser's standard controls. This is because the style sheet uses relative rather than absolute type sizes.

Tables. There are no tables on the site except the standard one on every page that controls the layout of the page. This carries the header: 'This table is for layout purposes only'

Forms. In the Help section, we have various forms  to enable you to make contact with us. Each form field is associated with its label or instruction using a <label> tag, so that screen reader software can proceed through the form methodically. Where radio buttons are used, there are associated <fieldset> and <legend> tags that enable them to be correctly grouped by screen reader software.

Scripts. There are no scripts that perform critical tasks. The main site menu at the top of each page uses a rollover script. However the same links are repeated without any scripting at the bottom of every page. There is also a script to remind users to check the 'terms and conditions' checkbox on certain forms. This activates a dialog box which can be cancelled by pressing 'return'. This script can safely be turned off by users who are happy to review their own forms before submission. The site remains fully functional with all scripting disabled.

Image descriptors. Every image is equipped with an ALT (alternative) text. Where images are used to convey meaning, the meaning is also conveyed in the ALT text. Bullet and spacer images have a null ALT so that non-visual browsers will not be slowed down by them.

Link descriptors.The small number of text links that would be meaningless out of context carry a more meaningful title in the form of a tooltip, which will work rather like the ALT text for an image.

Links to other websites do not open new windows. You always remain in the same window unless you instruct otherwise.

Complaints. If you think the website has accessibility problems that we could reasonably be expected to eradicate, please write to us. Our comments and complaints address is here
